Gyeongju 1-Day Itinerary: Bulguksa, Royal Tombs & Wolji Pond

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for almost 1,000 years. Today it’s a calm, open-air museum of temples and grassy royal tombs — and one full day is enough.

Getting there

KTX to Singyeongju Station: about 2 hours from Seoul, under an hour from Busan. Buses also run from Daegu.

Morning: Bulguksa Temple

An 8th-century temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site (with nearby Seokguram Grotto). The stone stairs and bridges are original Silla work.

Afternoon: tombs & observatory

  • Daereungwon — huge grassy burial mounds of Silla royals. You can walk inside Cheonmachong, the Heavenly Horse Tomb.
  • Cheomseongdae — a 7th-century stone observatory, one of the oldest in East Asia.
  • Hwangnidan-gil — a street of hanok cafes and small shops for a break.

Evening: Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond

Save this for after dark, when the pavilions light up and reflect in the water. The best photo in Gyeongju.

Tip

The town center is flat — renting a bike is the easiest way between sights.

Combine it with Busan in 2 days.
